Nestled between 5th and 9th Avenue and from 34th to 42nd Street, New York's Garment District supplies the fashion industry and the theater world with its fabrics, notions, sewing machine parts, threads, and needles. Many stores open their doors to the retail trade, so shoppers with an interest in beautiful fabrics or yarns can take advantage of an extensive selection of merchandise at affordable prices. The district has seen many changes over the decades, and while much of the manufacturing has shifted elsewhere, many designers prefer keeping the suppliers near their design workshops. Fashion Week brings renewed attention to the neighborhood, with fashion being the second largest industry in the city after finance. A walk through the Garment District invites an appreciation of the building blocks of great style and design.
