Kew Gardens is a feast for the eyes, a treat for the brain and a breath of fresh air for the soul. Covering 300 acres, it has something for everyone: a tree-top walkway, giant Victorian greenhouses (one boasting a gorgeous aquarium in the basement), an annual orchid festival in February and delights from rose gardens to bluebell woods. Oh, and summer jazz. Visit for a few hours or a whole day and you emerge feeling glad to be alive. Easy trip by District Line or London Overground.

Tropical treasure

The giant greenhouses are perfect for a (typically) rainy day in London, because you get all that greenery...inside. Just make sure you and your kids take layers of clothing rather than thick jumpers. It's steamy in there.

A tip for families

If you are taking the children to Kew Gardens, a great place to go is the larger than life Badger Sett. Kids love running through the tunnels playing games.
