Tucked under a railway bridge, in the depths of Aldgate East lies the Empress, an Indian restaurant so sycophantically worshipped by its locals, that Brick Lane should be extended to meet its doorstep. But then again, that would open this cheerful find to the hoards of BYO mobsters that make us favour bagels over Balti on Brick Lane anyway. That would be disaster. So it stays hidden, making anyone who stumbles upon its Lamb Sikandari and Chingri Sag Paneer all the more smug.
