Schiller's Liquor Bar
Casual cool on the Lower East Side

Schiller's combines simple French bistro fare with the kind of cool interior you'd expect from the man behind Balthazar and Pastis. It's all white tiles, wooden bars and ancient mirrors. I love the understated confidence of the wine menu. It's got three wines on it - Cheap, Decent and Good. And one washroom despite the two separate doors. You can't beat the steak-frites. Or just sit at the bar, drink one of their superb cocktails and check out the hip young things.

This place is indeed very cool - slightly smarter and a little older than some LES drinking dens. It's owned by the same people who own Balthazar on Spring Street (which is one of the most excellent places for breakfasts during the week & weekend brunches), and Pastis on 9th Avenue in the Meatpacking District (better for outdoor eating 0r early evening cocktails if you're out on the West Side). The quality of all three is truly excellent; reserve ahead for brunch at weekends to avoid queuing.

Good cheap eats
Good value red wine and a top mac and cheese.
