Q. Has Keith Fawkes’ Hampstead bookshop got the best range of books in the world? A. No. Q. Is it well laid-out and easy to navigate? A No. Q. Does it smell a bit funny? A. Er, yes. But then if you want a light, airy and perfectly organised shop, go to Borders on Oxford Street and forgo the delights of stumbling across that obscure first edition that’s eluded your grasp for the last twenty years. It epitomises what second-hand bookshops are all about.
