A young I.M. Pei designed the surrounding modernist Silver Towers in the early 1960s, and Norwegian sculptor Carl Nesjär was tapped to enlarge a design by Pablo Picasso for the courtyard (1967). Situated between Bleecker and West Houston Streets, the Bust of Sylvette conjures the modernist and internationalist spirit of New york in the 1960s. Standing 36-ft (11-m) tall, Sylvette is made of colored aggregate stone that's sandblasted to reveal details below.
