Arguably the world's best cabs, officially called "Hackney Carriages" (after the French word "haquenee", meaning a horse of medium size, for ladies to ride upon). 21,000 of these (usually) black taxis serve London, each driver possessing "The Knowledge", a qualification bestowed after around three year's training on the back of a scooter, and designed for a world pre-satnav (in fact, dating from 1865) - it covers 25,000 streets & 320 "main runs" within 6 miles of Charing Cross. We love them.

Little Black Buses!
Great, and better value than the tube if there's a few of you crossing Central London but pricey if you're heading further afield.
If you're trying to get a cab home in the evening, then you'll struggle to get one in the centre, if you're going south, it's not a bad idea to start walking down Whitehall towards Westminster - you're more likely to catch one coming back into town...
